The Claims Process
Clear, Supportive, and Easy to Navigate
From the moment you report a loss through the final resolution, our claims team is here to answer your questions, explain each step, and help keep the process moving forward.
What to Expect
Submit Your Claim
The best place to start is your local agent who can file the claim on your behalf. Claims may also be filed online through our website, our mobile app, or by phone whatever is most convenient for you. When filing, be sure to provide a valid e-mail address and phone number so we can keep you informed throughout the claim process.
Please proceed with making any temporary repairs needed to protect your property from further damage. Be sure to take pictures of the before and after and retain documentation of your expenses.
A dedicated claims representative will review your claim and connect with you to understand your situation and answer your questions.
Inspection & Documentation
If needed, an adjuster will reach out to you to schedule an inspection of the damages. This may include an in-person appointment or virtual review, depending on the situation. The adjuster will reach out to you by phone so it’s best to answer unknown callers and ensure your voicemail is able to receive messages during this time.
Estimate & Repairs
We’ll prepare an estimate of the damage and review your coverage. If repairs are needed, we’ll explain how the estimate was developed and what to expect next. Whether your claim involves property or a vehicle, you have the right to choose who completes your repairs.
Payment
We will issue payment for the agreed estimated cost of repairs or replacement, minus your deductible.
We’re always available to answer questions and can work with you to help keep the process moving smoothly.
Clear Resolution
Once everything is reviewed, we’ll walk you through the outcome whether that includes payment, repairs, or other next steps.
Ongoing Communication
We stay connected throughout the process to keep you informed and ensure everything is fully resolved.
Things to Consider
Property Losses
We highly recommend working with trusted, local contractors and taking the time to make informed decisions. If you’re unsure, we’re here to help review options with you.
For property repairs (contractors):
- Verify licensing and insurance
- Request written estimates and timelines
- Ask for references or reviews
- Avoid large upfront payments
- Be cautious of high-pressure sales tactics or offers to “waive” your deductible
Important: Be cautious of storm chasers
After severe weather events, out-of-area contractors often called “storm chasers” may go door-to-door offering quick repairs. While some may be legitimate, others may:
- Pressure you to sign contracts immediately
- Request large upfront payments
- Offer to handle your claim in ways that may not be appropriate
- Leave the area before work is completed or issues are resolved
Auto Losses
For auto repairs:
- Choose a reputable repair shop you trust
- Ask if the shop provides written estimates and warranties on repairs
- Confirm whether parts used will be OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or aftermarket
- Understand the repair timeline and availability of parts
- Ask about communication during the repair process
- If applicable, ask about rental vehicle options while your car is being repaired
Supplements and Additional Repair Costs
It is not uncommon for additional damage to be discovered during repairs. In such circumstances, the contractor or repair shop may request a supplement (an additional payment beyond the original estimate). To ensure the additional work is covered under your policy, please follow the guidelines below:
- All supplement requests should be submitted to us directly for evaluation in advance of performing the work. Repair shops typically work directly with us.
- All supplements must be reviewed and approved by RAM before payment
- You should not pay additional repair costs out-of-pocket without first contacting your claims representative
This helps protect you from unexpected expenses.
